How to Get Ahead of Q4 Hiring Before the Rush Begins

UK employers are finding their hiring confidence again. ManpowerGroup’s latest UK Employment Outlook Survey shows hiring confidence for October to December is more than double where it was this time last year, with 40% of employers planning to add to their teams. Permanent placements have risen for the first time since 2022, with the REC describing a job market that’s “starting to power up again”.

So, if you’ve been waiting for the right moment to get your hiring plans moving, this is it. The businesses that start early will get first pick of the talent before everyone else catches up.

Why September matters

Think of Q4 as a sandwich. At one end you’ve got Christmas leave and year-end deadlines. At the other, you’ve got notice periods. Fill it too late, and you’re stuck in the middle.

The good news is there are more people to talk to right now. KPMG and REC found that candidate availability is rising. The catch? The strongest candidates are still in demand, and starting salaries for skilled roles are climbing. So the early conversations are the ones that count.

Let’s count backwards

Say you want a signed offer by 1 December. A survey of UK recruitment managers puts the average time to hire at just under five weeks, which means applications need to be coming in by the end of October. That’s only a matter of weeks away.

And a signed offer isn’t the finish line. In the UK, notice periods usually run from one month for most staff to three months for managers. So an offer accepted on 1 December typically means a January start, and sometimes later.

Which raises a fair question: what if you need help before Christmas? That’s where flexible hiring earns its keep. Temporary and contract demand has been growing steadily, because plenty of employers want extra hands without a long-term commitment.

Five things to do in the next 30 days

  1. Work out where Q4 will pinch. Think about seasonal peaks, year-end deadlines, colleagues on leave, and roles that need someone in seat for January. Then sort what must be filled before the holidays from what can happily wait.
  2. Sort approvals and pay bands early. Internal sign-off is a sneaky source of delay, and an out-of-date salary band can lose you a great candidate. Agree budgets and ranges now, so nobody’s left waiting on an email chain.
  3. Make interviewing easier. Lock in panel diaries up front, keep the number of rounds sensible, and give each stage a decision deadline. It’s amazing how many days disappear into scheduling.
  4. Talk to people before the role goes live. Reconnect with strong applicants from earlier searches, and give your recruitment partner a heads-up on what’s coming. A warm shortlist on day one can save you weeks.
  5. Mix permanent and flexible. Use interim and contract talent to cover the Q4 crunch, and keep permanent hires for the roles you’ll need long term. It also gives you breathing room while the economic picture settles.

The bottom line

Confidence is coming back, candidates are available, and you have the one thing that’s hard to get back later: time. Businesses that plan now will head into the new year fully staffed and calm, while everyone else is still reading CVs.
